Benzoin is a warm, sweet balsamic resin that smells of vanilla, caramelized sugar and powdered incense, with resinous, slightly smoky and honeyed undertones that lend a cozy, amber warmth. Used primarily as a base note and fixative, benzoin smooths and sweetens compositions—anchoring oriental, amber and gourmand fragrances and bridging florals and spices with creamy vanillic depth; Siam varieties tend to be more vanilla-rich while Sumatra leans darker and more resinous.
