About
Birch tar is a dense, smoky, phenolic note marked by charred wood, warm asphalt, medicinal iodine and leather—evoking bonfires, smoked meat and tarry, metallic accords with a salty, slightly animalic edge. Its scent can be sharp and pungent up close but yields a captivating, primal smokiness as it dries. Used sparingly as a base and fixative, birch tar lends rugged, leathery and campfire facets to chypres, leathers, tobacco, incense and fougère-oud blends; perfumers temper its rawness with resins, labdanum, vetiver or florals to add depth, longevity and smoky complexity.
