Black leather is a darker, more tarry take on the leather note, conjuring motorcycle jackets, saddlery and inky car interiors; its scent is smoky, rubbery, bitter-dry and slightly animalic, with nuances of tobacco, smoke and engine oil. Used chiefly as a base note, it lends depth, structure and a nocturnal, rebellious mood to woods, chypres and orientals, often tempered with violet, iris or saffron, rounded by amber, vanilla or tonka, and amplified by oud, incense and smoky resins.
