CO2 extracts are solvent-free concentrates obtained with supercritical carbon dioxide that preserve an exceptionally true-to-life, often richer and more complete aroma than steam-distilled oils—capturing delicate floral tops, waxy or balsamic non-volatiles, and subtle green, spicy or even animalic facets depending on the plant. Perfumers use CO2s to impart authentic, rounded nuance to flowers, herbs, woods and resins, to deepen middles and bases as gentle fixatives, and to recreate natural complexity in niche and natural compositions, though they are potent and require careful dilution and stabilization.
