Espresso is a concentrated, dark-roasted coffee accord that smells intensely bitter, smoky and oily, with toasted-bean, burnt-sugar and cocoa-like facets rather than bright, acidic coffee top notes. Perfumers use it as a gourmand or base accent to add depth and realism—paired with vanilla, chocolate, tonka, tobacco, leather, woods or spices it lends warmth, urban sophistication and a slightly charred bitterness when applied sparingly to avoid cloying heaviness.
