Lichen has a cool, damp, mossy-green scent with earthy-mineral facets, hints of wet bark and stone, and a faintly bitter, leathery nuance that can feel slightly saline or smoky; it evokes shaded forest floors, lichen-crusted rocks, and sea-swept cliffs. In perfumery it lends atmospheric depth and naturalistic “forest floor” realism, anchoring woods, florals, chypres, and fougères; it is typically built from oakmoss/treemoss materials and mossy aromachemicals, often shaded with vetiver, patchouli, conifers, or marine accents.
