Licorice is a dark, bittersweet note with a pronounced aniseed facet, blending herbal, rooty and molasses-like sweetness with slightly medicinal, smoky-balsamic undertones; it can feel glossy and chewy, evoking black candies, old apothecaries, and winter liqueurs. In perfumery it is typically built from aniseed and balsamic materials to add gourmand depth and a retro twist, used sparingly to bridge vanilla and tonka with violet, iris, or spices, and to lacquer leathers, woods, and ambers with inky sweetness.
