Vervain (lemon verbena) smells like a sparkling, zesty lemon with fresh green, slightly herbal and tea-like facets—bright, clean and mildly astringent with a faint bitter-leaf edge. In perfumery it functions as a volatile top note that lends immediate freshness and an airy, sunlit herbaceousness to colognes, fougères and modern florals, often blended with bergamot, lavender, petitgrain or green and woody bases and sometimes supported by fixatives to extend its brief presence.
