Tolu balsam is a sweet, warm balsamic resin from the tolu tree (Myroxylon), smelling of ambered vanilla and honeyed toffee with soft cinnamon-spice, resinous woods, and faint cola–plum nuances that feel plush, comforting, and slightly powdery. Used as a base note and fixative, it rounds and sweetens ambers, orientals, gourmands, and tobacco/leather accords, pairing well with benzoin, labdanum, tonka, patchouli, and spices to add depth and lasting warmth, and is typically dosed lightly due to sensitization limits.
