Wood barrel is a warm, lived-in woody note suggesting toasted oak staves: vanillic and caramelic sweetness, coconutty oak lactones, faint smoke and resin, tannic sawdust, and a cool, humid cellar aura that evokes whisky casks and wine caves. Perfumers build it with oakwood extracts and oak/whisky lactones, touches of guaiacol and vanillin, and sometimes rum or cognac nuances, cade, or guaiacwood to impart boozy depth and an aged-in-wood patina, enriching and anchoring woody, leather, tobacco, amber, and gourmand compositions.
